Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's lawyer filed the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer stated he would attempt to have the case terminated for multiple factors including that his the accused, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the magistrate they aimed to present multiple petitions to throw out the legal matter before a court case, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to assume control of the case.

Mr Comey's case was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his probe into an additional political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the judge read his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he understood the charges.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the time, Mr Comey was leading an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, James Comey sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against the candidate were never brought, causing criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys claim James Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he provided false information to the upper house by stating he had not authorized a person at the agency to leak to journalistic entities data about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

In a video James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."

"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Trump posted on digital channels insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and other people.
